Controversial
deepening after easygoing widening (Euromid)
After
a long debate, the EU's Ministers of Foreign Affairs gave
Turkey green light to start accession negotiations to become
a member of the European Union. By respecting the commitment
taken in October 2004, the EU has demonstrated to be a reliable
partner; on the other hand, lengthy negotiations - Ankara
is not expected to join the EU before 10 years - will make
sure that Member States' second thoughts on Turkey's eligibility
to EU membership are duly considered.......(more)
"About
Hamas", 14 October 2005.
What
is Hamas? Hamas, is a Palestinian Islamist paramilitary organisation
formed in the 1980s, as an offshot of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Hamas is an abbreviation of Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah,
and the acronym is colloquial Arabic for enthusiasm
or zeal. Its stated goal is to establish an Islamic
theocracy in the area that is currently Israel, the West Bank
and Gaza. Hamas asserts that individual and community struggle
(jihad) to wrest control of the land from Israel is a religious
duty for all Muslims. Hamas is listed as a terrorist group
by Israel, Canada, the United States, and the EU since 2003,
and its attacks targeting Israeli civilians and other human
rights abuses have been condemned by the United Nations Commission
on Human Rights and by Human Rights Watch.....(continue).
EU
and Iran still at odds
The
outcome of the talks that took place on Wednesday 2 February

The meeting between the 'three big ones' - Germany, France
and the UK - and the High Representative for the EU External
Policy and Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Hossein Mousavian,
represented the second stage in the process initiated in Paris
on November 2004......more Word

EU-Iran
negotiations on nuclear proliferation drawing near to Iran's
presidential elections
Over
the past few months, the lengthy negotiations between Iran
and the EU's Big Threes - Germany, France and UK - have witnessed
a rapprochement of the respective views about the Islamic
Republic's programme of uranium enrichment. However, a solution
of the spat still remains to be found......more Word

Hezbollah
under the spotlight
The
assassination of former Lebanese prime minister, Rafik al-Hariri,
on 14th February, was followed by less-than-veiled accusations
against Syria for culpability in the attack, and the so-called
home-grown 'Intifada for Independence' which took thousands
of Lebanese to the streets of Beirut, calling for the immediate
withdrawal of Syria from Lebanese soil. In addition, we have
seen increased pressure from the EU and US to persuade Damascus
to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1559. In addition,
ongoing tensions with Iran have led to renewed debate regarding
what today is arguably the most controversial non-governmental
militant polity in the Middle East: Hezbollah.......more
