November - Universal Children's Day (UNICEF)
By
resolution 836(IX) of 14 December 1954, the General Assembly
recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's
Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and
understanding between children. It recommended that the
Day was to be observed also as a day of activity devoted
to promoting the ideals and objectives of the Charter and
the welfare of the children of the world. The Assembly suggested
to governments that the Day be observed on the date and
in the way which each considers appropriate. The date 20
November, marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the
Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the
Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989......(more).

November - World Television Day
The
World Television Day is celebrated each year at 21 November
to encourage global exchanges of television programmes,
particularly those focusing on peace, security, economic
and social development, and the enhancement of cultural
exchanges. The World Television Day, proclaimed by the UN
General Assembly in 1996 by resolution (resolution 51/205),
commemorates the date on which, in 1996, the first World
Television Forum was held at UN Headquarters in New York......(more).

November - International Day for the Elimination of Violence
against Women
By
resolution 54/134 of 17 December 1999, the General Assembly
designated 25 November as the International Day for the
Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited governments,
international organizations and NGOs to organize activities
designated to raise public awareness of the problem on that
day. Women's activists have marked 25 November as a day
against violence since 1981. This date came from the brutal
assassination in 1961, of the three Mirabal sisters, political
activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican
ruler Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).....(more).

November - International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian
People
In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance
of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with
the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40 B). On that day,
in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition
of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)).
In resolution 58/19 of 3 December 2003, the Assembly requested
the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights
of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian
Rights, as part of the observance of the International Day
of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on 29 November,
to continue to organize an annual exhibit on Palestinian
rights in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission
of Palestine to the United Nations. It also encouraged
Member States to continue to give the widest support and
publicity to the observance of the Day of Solidarity......(more).

December - World Aids Day (WHO)
The
General Assembly, in 1988, expressed its deep concern about
the pandemic proportions of the Acquired Immunodeficiency
Syndrome (AIDS). Noting that the World Health Organization
(WHO) had declared 1 December 1988 World AIDS Day, the Assembly
stressed the importance of observing that occasion (resolution
43/15). Today, over 41 million people are living with HIV/AIDS......(more).

December - International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
The
International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2 December,
recalls the date of the adoption, by the General Assembly,
of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of
the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution
of Others (resolution 317 (IV) of 2 December 1949).
By resolution 57/195 of 18 December 2002, the Assembly proclaimed
2004 the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle
against Slavery and its Abolition......(more).

December - International Civil Aviation Day (ICAO)
International
Civil Aviation Day was established in 1994 by ICAO, through
Assembly Resolution A29-1, to mark the 50th anniversary
of the Organization, created on 7 December 1944. In 1996,
pursuant to an ICAO initiative and with the assistance of
the Canadian Government, the United Nations General Assembly
by resolution officially recognized 7 December as International
Civil Aviation Day and listed it as an official UN day.
The purpose of the global celebration is to generate and
reinforce worldwide awareness of the importance of international
civil aviation in the social and economic development of
States, and of the role of ICAO in promoting the safety,
efficiency and regularity of international air transport......(more).

December - International Anti-Corruption Day
International
Anti-Corruption Day on 9 December marks one year since the
signing conference for the United Nations Convention against
Corruption was held in Mérida, Mexico. Effective
action against corruption is the responsibility of governments,
and implementation of the Convention rests in the hands
of States. Civil society and the private sector also have
an active role to play in these efforts by supporting governments
and holding them accountable. However, the capacity to take
these actions does not always exist in many developing and
least developed countries. For this reason, UNODC provides
technical assistance through legal advisory services for
the ratification of the Convention and technical cooperation
projects focusing on preventive measures. .....(more).

December - Human Rights Day
All
States and interested organizations were invited by the
General Assembly in 1950 to observe 10 December as Human
Rights Day (resolution 423 (V)). The Day marks the anniversary
of the Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights in 1948.
18 December - International Migrant's Day. In 1997, Filipino
and other Asian migrant organizations began celebrating
and promoting the 18th December as the International Day
of Solidarity with Migrants. This date was choosen because
it was on 18th December 1990 that the UN adopted the International
Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrants
Workers and Members of Their Families......(more).
